Thumbs Up Little Junior (TULJ), a fortnightly Chinese periodical for preschoolers, celebrates its 10th anniversary with a roving exhibition and interactive play space!
Thumbs Up Little Junior (TULJ), a fortnightly Chinese periodical for preschoolers, published by ZBSchools of SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group, will mark its 10th anniversary with a roving exhibition from 4 June to 25 August 2023.
The highlight of the exhibition is an interactive cardboard play structure specially designed and built for children to learn the Chinese language through play. The centerpiece is a “giant cake” for children to climb and explore. Members of the “Thumbies Family” 《拇指家族》, which are popular characters in TULJ, are found around the exhibition venue at the library. Children who visit the exhibition will also be treated to other exciting programmes, such as workshops and story-telling sessions on selected weekends.

An interactive and vibrant play space for children aged 2 to 8 and young families to learn more about TULJ and its 6 Thumbies characters. Children can explore the main cake structure made out of cardboard. They can climb and decorate the cake structure with “sprinkles” and “candles”. Through these activities, they will learn to recognise colours and numbers in Chinese characters.
Children can also interact with the Thumbies cardboard characters by using their voice to trigger various reactions via audio sensors found on them Some of these characters will also have embedded touch screens showcasing the TULJ app and content.
There is a big magnetic birthday card on site for children to leave a birthday message for TULJ.
Storytelling Performance - Xiao Mu Zhi's Birthday Bash

This participatory storytelling session invites children to recall and share their precious memory of spending time with Xiao Mu Zhi, a character from the Thumbies Family who is turning 10 this year.
Parent / Child Puppet Workshop
Venue: Ang Mo Kio Public Library
Dates: Multiple Dates in Jun
This parent-child workshop teaches participants to repurpose everyday materials to create puppets and use simple puppetry techniques to make them come alive. Through play, children can unleash their creativity and strengthen their bond with their parents or caregivers at the same time.

Children will celebrate Xiao Mu Zhi’s 10th birthday with his cousin Niu Niu and friends from the Thumbies family at these workshops prepared by preschool teachers from SUSS Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Chinese).
Children and parents will be using Air Dry Clay to mould Niu Niu or Xiao Mu Zhi figurines which they can bring home after the workshop. Participants can also design a birthday cake for Xiao Mu Zhi at the workshop.
