This year's Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival is themed "Mid-Autumn Across Generations" and it will showcase its signature street light-up along with a series of exciting activities, including the Lantern Walk on 14 Sep. The event aims to unite people from all backgrounds in celebration and foster a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture.
A Towering 8m Centrepiece
At the heart of Chinatown is a magnificent 8-metre-tall statue, depicting three generations of a family gathering together under the moonlight and lanterns. This towering centrepiece captures the essence of familial bonds with festive tradition and serves as a poignant reminder for everyone to take time to spend with family. This serene scene captures grandparents, parents, and children sharing stories of how they have celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival over the years.
These stories come to life as visitors journey through the three segments, each depicting a distinct era of celebration.
- Kampong Nostalgia (Grandparents' Era)
Visitors are immersed in the nostalgic charm of the past, set against the backdrop of traditional huts, highlighting the rustic charm of Singapore’s past. Grandparents are seen preparing to host the family with home-made mooncakes, lighting paper lanterns and sharing stories under the full moon reflecting the close-knit familial ties of yesteryear.
- Heartlands Harmony (Parents' Era)
Now we move forward to the parents' era, set against the backdrop of Singapore's old HDB flats. This scene captures the essence of family gatherings in the heartlands, showcasing parents sharing mooncakes with neighbours and children engaging in lantern processions. The HDB flats symbolise community spirit and togetherness, highlighting the continuity of traditions and the unity that the celebrations bring to the community.
- Modern Celebration (Present Day)
Now you're caught up with the present day, with the iconic Singapore skyline as the backdrop. Families from all three-generations celebrate under the full moon, blending traditional practices with contemporary elements. This scene reflects progress and innovation, while the full moon signifies unity and completeness.
