SCCC Cultural Extravaganza is back again this year and there’s plenty to do with your little ones! It’s the perfect opportunity to introduce your little ones to Chinese culture, from social practices to art.

Here’s a list of 8 things to do with your little ones at the SCCC Cultural Extravaganza 2019!

1. Tile Colouring and Appreciation Workshop

Location: SCCCI Multi-Purpose Hall, Level 7
Date: 25 May 2019
Hour: 11.00 am – 11.30 am | 2.00 pm – 2.30 pm | 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm
Admission: $5/pax (register here)
Suitable Ages: 5 yrs and above

Your little ones probably have colored in coloring books (and maybe even on walls) but have they colored tiles? They will be able to thanks to the Tile Colouring and Appreciation Workshop by The Intan.  

Adorned with colourful elegant motifs of flowers, fruits and birds, majolica tiles were used in Peranakan houses and shops so extensively that they came to be known as Peranakan tiles. Learn more about these tiles and customize one for yourself at the workshop.

There will also be an exhibition of Peranakan cultural items such as kebayas, porcelain replicas and batik sarongs.

2. Sing Life Collective Market

Location: SCCC Ho Bee Concourse, Level 1
Date: 25 May – 26 May 2019

The Sing Life Collective Market, a bazaar offering an array of unique craft goods among others is a great place to go on a shopping spree without breaking your wallet. The accompanying music playing in the background by local and overseas bands, as part of the Chinese Indie Music Concert, the first of its kind, just makes it better.

3. Then & Now: Celebrating Chinese Wedding Traditions

Location: SCCC Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Gallery, Level 2
Date: 25 May – 31 May 2019
Hour:  11 am – 8 pm (31 May: 11 am – 6 pm)
Admission: FREE

This exhibit showcases how the Hokkiens, Teochews and Cantonese have been celebrating their weddings in Singapore through the years since the 1900s. You’ll get to learn about the various dialects’ wedding customs and processions, costumes and cuisines.

Just seeing might not be that much fun, which is why you also have the opportunity to dress up in traditional gear and snap pictures on a wedding sedan chair!

4. Clay Exploration

Location: SCCC Zhong Sheng Jian Recital Studio, Level 6

Date & Hour:

Playing with clay is always fun, no matter how old you are. Which is why you should partner up with your little ones for a little Clay Exploration and create miniature clay cheongsam, longevity bun or a baby full-moon gift package.

5. Fantastick Puppets

Location: SCCC SCCCI Multi-Purpose Hall, Level 7

Have you or your little ones seen a Hokkien glove puppet show before? Well, we won’t fault you if you have never seen one for the Hokkien glove puppetry is a disappearing art form today.

With its origin dating back up to the 17^th century, the Hokkien glove puppet has undergone several evolutions through the years, which is what the Fantastick Puppets exhibit is about. This is also your opportunity to catch a Hokkien glove puppet live in action!

6. Island Tales – A Multi-lingual Street Wayang

Forget about sitting back and keeping quiet during a performance. Presenting stories of friendship, loyalty and love among the early settlers of Singapore, Island Tales by Ground Z-0 is an interactive street-wayang in the format of a retro game show. In other words you’re encouraged to interact with the performers.

7. Circus by the People

Location: SCCC Ho Bee Concourse, Level 1

Watch UNBOX, a circus production by Bonfire, Singapore’s very own social circus. Expect a remarkable display of juggling acts, diabolo, cry wheel, and more! Everything just becomes much more exciting with when you add in a circus act, don’t you think?

Oh, and you can even pick up a few basic circus acts to entertain your little ones with when they get bored on a rainy day!

8. Beyond the Bamboo: Dizi Workshop

Location: SCCC Creative Box, Level 6
Date: 9 Jun 2019
Hour: 3 pm – 5 pm
Admission: $5/pax (register here)
Suitable Ages: 6 yrs and above with parental guidance
Medium: English and Chinese

If you’ve ever been interested in the dizi, here’s your chance to try your hand at it. You’ll be able to learn to perform with the bamboo flute, which is a highly popular instrument in the Chinese orchestra.
