The Lion & the Mouse by Jerry Pinkey
Brought to you by Owl Readers Club
A picture says a thousand words as the adage fondly says. What happens when you have a book of many pictures but no words at all?? Well it is definitely not just a picture book!
This month, we bring you one of Aesop’s most beloved fabales illustrated by award winning artist, Jerry Pinkey.
The Lion & The Mouse is a Caldecott Medal Book. The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
How then do you review a book with no words?? The same way that you will “read” it to your little ones! In any way you can think off and being limited only by your imagination!
The beauty of a book with no words is that you are not constrained by what is written but free to tell the story in ways you want to and focusing on aspects that may be important to you. For the slightly older ones, their curiosity will be piqued as they focus on various aspects of the story as they unfold. Sit tight and be prepared to be amazed by what is going on in those minds of theirs as they asked the most unusual (or irrelevant) questions!
The pictures in this well illustrated book should fire up any parent’s creative juices to tell this story to their little ones. Storytelling is a very subtle craft and a very crucial life skill. Your child may be the first but will never be your last audience. Stay tuned as we will soon unveil our new collaboration with a local initiative focused on storytelling!
