Looking for a magical and educational outdoor experience with your children? Here's everything you need to know to catch the mesmerising Orionid Meteor Shower with your family.

What Are Meteors?

Meteors, often referred to as “shooting stars,” are rocks that enter Earth's atmosphere at incredible speeds, causing them to glow and burn up. These fast-moving streaks of light can originate from comets, asteroids, or even other planets within our solar system.

What’s the Difference Between a Meteor, a Meteorite, and a Meteoroid?

Before these glowing rocks enter our atmosphere, they’re called meteoroids. Once they streak through the atmosphere, we call them meteors. If a part of the meteor survives the journey and lands on Earth, it's known as a meteorite.

What Is the Orionid Meteor Shower?

The Orionid Meteor Shower occurs every year when Earth passes through debris left behind by the famous Halley's Comet. This debris enters our atmosphere and lights up the night sky with brilliant “shooting stars.” The Orionids typically peak in mid-October and are known for their bright, fast-moving meteors, which can leave glowing trails.

The Orionids will be visible from 26 September to 22 November, but the peak viewing period is between 20 and 21 October. The best time to view the meteor shower is after 2am, when the radiant point in the Orion constellation is higher in the sky.

Where’s the Best Spot in Singapore for Viewing?

For the best view, find a location with a wide-open sky, away from city lights and pollution. Places like parks, beaches, or reservoirs can offer a better chance to enjoy the meteors. While Singapore’s light pollution may make viewing more challenging, clear skies will improve visibility. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and seek out darker areas for the best experience.

No Special Equipment Needed

One of the great things about meteor showers is that you don’t need any special equipment! The bright, fast-moving streaks are visible to the naked eye, making this event perfect for a spontaneous family outing. Just bring along some blankets, snacks, and your curiosity for a fun night under the stars.

A Fun and Educational Experience for Kids

Watching the Orionid Meteor Shower with your children is a wonderful way to introduce them to the wonders of space. The excitement of seeing “shooting stars” together will make this a memorable and magical night for the whole family.

Mark your calendars and set aside some time to gaze at the skies with your kids.
