Museums are a great place to stimulate young minds, and even better, it's provides a great opportunity to bond with your kids. Here’s our pick of 5 family-friendly museums in Kuala Lumpur that might interest you!

1. National Museum (Muzium Negara)

The National Museum is where you can discover more about the rich history and culture of Malaysia. Inspired by a traditional Malay palace, the building houses artefacts from pre-historic era to present day, spread within the four galleries. The fascinating collection includes a replica of the over-10,000-year-old Perak Man (the oldest skeleton discovered in Southeast Asia), weapons used in the war, royal beds, and statues. There is also an outdoor exhibit displaying transportations from over the years, such as a bullock cart, a trishaw, and a small steam locomotive.

2. Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery

Housed within the glass building of Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia’ centre of knowledge and learning excellence, Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery is everything about the economic history and importance in Malaysia, and nothing bland.

Spread within its four storeys are six permanent galleries—Children’s, Islamic Finance, Bank Negara Malaysia, Economics, Numismatics, and Art—featuring RM1 Million Tunnel, a long tunnel made up of different Malaysian notes, interactive exhibits, paintings and sculptures. The museum also hosts a variety of kid-friendly programs you can check out.

The interactive exhibits are temporarily closed and visitors are required to book a slot for their visit at least two days in advance.

Through the history of the Royal Malaysian Police, the Royal Malaysian Police Museum offers an engrossing history of Malaysia. Within this small museum are three galleries that brings you through the policing history, starting from when the Royal Malaysian Police were established. Artefacts such as the police uniforms, everyday items like an ancient typewriter, a pith helmet and a drinking water filer, as well as an impressive armoury containing police firearms and weapons—knuckledusters, sticks and swords—used by criminals, help paint a vivid image.

4. Petrosains, The Discovery Centre

Petrosains, The Discovery Centre, is a museum of science and technology. To begin your exploration of Petrosains’ galleries, you will have to start at Dark Ride, where a carriage meant to resemble an oil drop will ferry you on a journey through Malaysia’s rainforests, mountains and achievements. The galleries are packed with interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, including an oil platform built-to-scale. There’s also a toddler play area.

5. National Science Centre (Pusat Sains Negara)

The glass dome building that is the National Science Centre sits atop a hill at Bukit Kiara. Aside from the galleries filled with interactive exhibits, including a walk-in tunnel aquarium, there are also an assortment of gardens, an Interactive Zone with exercising equipments, Water Plaza and a Prehistoric Garden.
