Wanting Kimchi

Wanting Kimchi (@wantingkimchi), the second chef in Chef X’s line-up will take up residency at the 24-seater commercial F&B space in Clarke Quay Central from now to 26 August 2024. Look forward to an array of their signature low salt, sugar and MSG-free handcrafted fermented side dishes alongside new hot dishes.

About Chef X

Following the success of Baker X, introduced in December 2021 at Orchard Central, Far East Organization introduced Chef X. The second incubator project allows home-based and private dining chefs to run a full-fledged commercial restaurant within Clarke Quay Central mall for four or eight weeks.

About Founder of Wanting Kimchi

Zeng Wanting, the founder of Wanting Kimchi, cleverly plays on her own name, ‘Wanting’. Since young, she loved watching her auntie create magic in the kitchen using simple tools like wok, pot, and mortar and pestle. Though she never cooked in her auntie's kitchen, she learned by observing. Years later, living alone in Melbourne and later as a budget-strapped student in the United Kingdom, Wanting started cooking Asian food to ease homesickness. It was also then that she began making her own kimchi. After a decade in the corporate world in Singapore, she finally pursued her dream of making from scratch food that feeds both the body and soul, finding fulfilment in the primitive joy of cooking.

All-Day Top Sellers

Kimchi

Not to be missed during their residency are Wanting Kimchi's top sellers: Signature Cabbage Kimchi ($15 per Tub) and Addictive Apple Kimchi ($15 per tub). Drawing inspiration from their passion for K-drama, food, and fermentation, the Signature Cabbage Kimchi was the first creation sold by the home chef. Made from scratch with the freshest, highest-quality produce, it is naturally rich in antioxidants and probiotics. The Addictive Apple Kimchi features cubes of fresh, juicy apple marinated in a richly flavourful kimchi paste. Living up to its name, each bite of crunchy apple in combination with the savoury, sweet, spicy, and umami-packed profile of the house-made paste leaves one coming back for more.

Another popular side dish on the dinner menu is the Premium Raw Marinated Crabs ($99 for 2 crabs). Made using live, wild-caught blue swimmer crabs from Indonesia, the fresh crustaceans are marinated in a soy-based superior stock cooked from scratch for hours.

Lunch: K-Style Caifan

For lunch service, Wanting Kimchi will feature its main offerings of a wide variety of side dishes and protein options with a pick-and-choose rice bento or bibimbap, inspired by Singaporean economy rice. The rotational menu offers healthy, delicious home-cooked food with wild fermentation.

New All-Day Specialty Mains

Wanting is also excited to introduce new hot dishes at Chef X, which she was not able to offer to her customers before. One of these is the Kimchi Jjim ($69 for diners), the braised kimchi, crafted with slow-aged, whole-head cabbage kimchi, a generous serving of pork ribs, and a homemade stock base. This steaming hot, almost hot-pot-like dish is rich, yet light on the palate and easy to digest, with the natural sourness of the aged kimchi perfectly balancing the richness of the meat.
