Instagram Launches Parental Supervision Tools and Family Center in Singapore

Instagram announced new tools and resources in Singapore to help keep young people safe and support their wellbeing online.

Introducing The Family Center, resource hub where parents and guardians can access resources and tools to help young people build positive online habits. Through the Family Center, parents and guardians can now initiate a supervision experience for the Instagram accounts of young people in their family. Over time, the Family Center will become a hub to help parents, guardians and young people manage experiences across all Meta technologies.

Resources For Parents

The Family Center is accessed via the Instagram app and includes articles, videos and tips on a range of topics to help parents and guardians start a conversation with teens about social media. It also includes video tutorials on how to set up and use the new Supervision Tools.

Supervision Tools

The Supervision Tools allow parents and guardians to:

Manage time spent on Instagram

• Parents and guardians can set screen time limits and schedule breaks for their teen during the day or week

Keep track of connections on Instagram

• Parents and guardians can be notified on new accounts that young people in their family are following - as well as the accounts that follow them back

Get notified of reports

• Young people can choose to notify their parent or guardian if they make a report on Instagram, so they can discuss what happened together

Building Mutual Respect

It is important to note that this is not a one-sided initiative. It is an initiative to build respect and to help both parents and teens find a balance in the online world.

You will not be able to initiate Supervision tools from your end, instead parents and guardians can send invitations to young people in their family to initiate Supervision tools, and vice-versa. Even with the Supervision tools, there will be a limit to what you can and cannot see, eg, you will not have access to their search history or messages.
