After five years of redevelopment, the Chinese and Japanese Gardens reopen with restored landmarks and new eco-friendly features, blending old and new.

The much-anticipated reopening of the Chinese and Japanese Gardens at Jurong Lake Gardens, marks a fresh chapter for these iconic landmarks. Nestled in the heartlands, these rejuvenated gardens blend cultural heritage with modern eco-friendly designs, creating a space for families, nature enthusiasts, and the community to reconnect with nature.

A Glimpse into the Past and Future

Originally constructed in the 1970s, the Chinese and Japanese Gardens have long been a symbol of serenity and tradition in Singapore. Now part of the larger 90-hectare Jurong Lake Gardens, which also includes the Lakeside Garden, these gardens have been thoughtfully redeveloped to maintain their classic charm while introducing new attractions that cater to the modern visitor.

The gardens’ reopening follows five years of extensive rebuilding, guided by feedback from over 14,000 members of the public. The result? A beautiful fusion of old and new, with restored landmarks such as the Twin Pagodas and Grand Arch standing alongside innovative additions like the Water Wall Court and eco-conscious spaces.

Discover the Chinese Garden

Visitors to the Chinese Garden can expect a rich tapestry of experiences. As you enter through the iconic Grand Arch, now enhanced to offer an unobstructed “open window” view of the garden, you’ll be greeted by a landscape that artfully blends traditional Chinese aesthetics with tropical horticulture.

One of the key highlights is the Edible Garden, which showcases a variety of edible plants, including herbs, flowers, and fruits such as pumpkins, luffas, and lady’s fingers. This garden not only serves as a peaceful retreat but also educates visitors on the joys of growing their own food.

Don’t miss the picturesque Twin Pagodas, which offer stunning views of Jurong Lake and the cityscape beyond. Families can explore the Bonsai Garden, a tranquil space that captures the delicate art of bonsai, making it a perfect backdrop for quiet reflection or a fun family photo session.

For those seeking a refreshing experience, the bamboo grove leading to a waterfall provides a cool, shaded pathway where the sound of flowing water and rustling bamboo creates a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Explore the Japanese Garden

Adjacent to the Chinese Garden, the Japanese Garden offers a tranquil, zen-like experience inspired by traditional Japanese landscapes. The highlight here is the new Guesthouse, constructed from mass-engineered timber, which emphasises the gardens’ commitment to sustainability. This multipurpose hall can host up to 1,000 people and stays naturally cool by tapping into natural air circulation, making it an ideal venue for community events and gatherings.

Nature lovers will enjoy the Water Lily Garden, home to Singapore’s largest collection of water lilies, featuring over 150 varieties that bloom both day and night. The Sunken Garden, with its towering green walls and tranquil water features, provides a secluded retreat that evokes the feeling of being in a hidden valley.

Eco-Friendly Initiatives and Community Involvement

The redevelopment of the Chinese and Japanese Gardens is not just about aesthetics; it’s also a testament to Singapore’s commitment to sustainability. From using mass-engineered timber and carbon dioxide mineralised concrete to implementing smart water management systems, every aspect of the gardens’ design reflects an effort to minimise environmental impact.

Community involvement has been a cornerstone of the rejuvenation process. Landscape architects, volunteers, and even local bonsai collectors played significant roles in shaping the gardens. This collaborative approach ensures that the gardens are not just a public space but a community treasure, reflecting the collective hopes and aspirations of its visitors.

Events and Activities

Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful spot to unwind, the rejuvenated Chinese and Japanese Gardens at Jurong Lake Gardens have something for everyone. Come and explore these beautifully transformed spaces, where history meets modernity, and nature thrives at every turn.
