One of the most spectacular celestial event is happening in August! Here's everything you need to know about meteors, the Perseids, and how you can catch this incredible natural show.
What Are Meteors?
Meteors, often called "shooting stars," are actually small rocks that enter Earth's atmosphere at high speeds, causing them to glow and burn up. These streaks of light flash across the sky in just a few seconds. Meteors originate from our solar system and can come from comets, asteroids, or even other planets.
Meteor, Meteorite, or Meteoroid?
- Meteoroid: A small piece of an asteroid or comet, still in space.
- Meteor: When a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere and burns up, it's called a meteor.
- Meteorite: If a meteor survives its fiery journey through the atmosphere and lands on Earth, it's known as a meteorite.
What Is a Meteor Shower?
A meteor shower occurs when Earth passes through a trail of debris left by a comet or asteroid. As these tiny particles enter Earth's atmosphere, they burn up and create multiple meteors, often appearing to radiate from a single point in the sky. Meteor showers are predictable annual events, as Earth regularly crosses these debris trails.
The Perseid Meteor Shower: What to Expect
The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the most famous and reliable meteor showers, celebrated for its bright and colorful meteors. This event occurs annually from mid-July to late August, peaking this year between 12 and 13 Aug 2024!
Why Is It Called the Perseids?
The Perseid Meteor Shower gets its name because the meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus. However, the actual cause of the Perseids is Earth's passage through the debris trail left by the comet Swift-Tuttle.
What Will You See?
During the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower, you can expect to see between 50 and 100 meteors per hour. These meteors are bright, fast-moving, and often leave vivid trails of light across the sky, making for a breathtaking spectacle.
How to Watch the Perseids in Singapore
Watching the Perseid Meteor Shower in Singapore can be a bit challenging due to light pollution and frequent cloud cover. However, for the best viewing experience, try to find a darker location away from city lights, such as parks, beaches, or open spaces. Checking the weather forecast for clear skies will also help you plan your viewing.

No special equipment is needed to enjoy the Perseid Meteor Shower. The meteors are bright enough to be seen with the naked eye, so leave your telescopes and binoculars at home. Just find a comfortable spot, look up, and enjoy the show.
