For the first time, the annual River Hongbao carnival will be held at the Gardens by the Bay, a shift from its usual venue at the Marina Bay floating platform. We take a look at the highlights of the upcoming carnival!
24 Giant Lanterns
There will be 24 giant lanterns scattered around the venue. Lanterns are an integral part of Chinese culture. Traditionally, lanterns are displayed during the Chinese New Year to symbolise wishes for a brighter future and an auspicious year ahead.
You will find lantern displays including the popular God of Fortune (Cai Shen Ye), the 12 Zodiac Animals and more! You can expect lots of photo opportunities!
Lion-Dance Exhibition
The “Guardians of Good Fortune: The History of Lion Dance in Singapore” Exhibition @ River Hongbao showcases the importance and symbolism of the lion in Chinese culture.
There will be a curated selection of lion dance artefacts from private collectors and organisations, some dating as far back as the 1950s.
Nightly Screenings of Pre-recorded Performance
Due to safe-management measures, there will not be any "LIVE' performances during River Hongbao 2021. Instead, visitors can expect performances streamed online via the River Hongbao Facebook page.
You can expect favourites like the Getai Night, as well as new segments including the Joys of Spring, and the Xinyao Night; a contemporary Mandarin vocal genre that is uniquely Singapore, popularized between the late 1970s to 1980s. Below is the performance line-up.
